Lithophane have been around for nearly 200 years. A lithophane is an image etched on to translucent material that is is then backlit to show the image on the front. The process of creating this photographic artwork can be through physically carving the materials, chemically or in the case of these samples 3D printed.
When the Lithophane is not lit it can look like a mysterious object, then the back light reveals the photographic nature of the subject. The samples created here are night lights meant to give a unique turn on a functional item. However, the lithophane can also be lit by hanging in a window or hung in front of a lamp shade.
